it would probaly be a pain in *** changing those yourself, so i sugggest that you take it to an experienced auto shop and let them do it for you

there is a little man, sat in an office in germany who gets paid a helluva lot more thatn you to design the perfect steering wheel for an audi, he slaves for months to get the design just right, ergonomically, and then some bleedin numpty buys it and starts ragging bits out of it, and replaces them with ill fitting aftermarket parts, HONESTLY ARE YOU RIGHT IN YOUR HEAD!!! Take off the facia / shround around the base of the handbrake - will give you a better idea of how to get it off - normally secired with a screw / clip at the bottom. Gear knob normally twists off.
Gear knob might twist off...Handbrake handle is most likely attached with adhesive.

If you can't fit it yourself, you may be looking at close to another grand to pay someone to do all the fiddly stuff.

alright so i have a 2003 Toyota Camry XLE and I really really want to change my shift knob to like a wood finish since the car's interior is wood finish. If you had your car flashed to 2.0 your transmission has had its shifting pattern upgraded to allow faster, more economical shifting. The 2.0 upgrade also allows you to go into manual mode just by slapping the shifter or paddles. If you bought a used smart or an 08' this year then the USB 2.0 tranny upgrade has already been done
09's had this function pre-installed and it is completely normal for the smart to do this. Also if you had not noticed, in manual mode you can get to 60 in less than 12.8 seconds.

Can the boot cover on a manual transmission be changed?
I have a 1997 Geo Prizm with manual 5-speed transmission. The shift stick boot cover is one of those accordion style covers and I think it looks dumb (don't ask me why). I'd like to change the boot cover to a leather %26quot;cloth%26quot; cover but I'm not sure where to even start, let alone where to buy one. Any suggestions? I'd also like to put a new shift knob on it.

I just bought a 2003 PT Cruiser. There are a few things I want to get done to it but I am having a hard time figureing out things that would make it 'my own.' Give your Chrysler service department a call, and see if it can be removed. If it can't you don't have anything to worry about.
You should also purchase the Haynes repair manual for the 2001 to 2003 Cruiser. It will help you understand more about your vehicle and what it will take to make some changes.

the car is automatic transmission and it a button has to be pushed to change gears. It also has that tricky overdrive button which is what I think is holding me up. There are wires on it and i believe thats whats stopping me but idk how to remove them. I unscrewed the screws in my handle myself but it wont come off cuz of the wires. And now im mad because i cant get it back to the way it was, anyway i want to put a new handle on or fix the old one so does anyone have specifics on how to deal with the overdrive button and wires. Is overdrive even necessary, im not drag racing so i know i wont need it lol. If possible please let me know if i can just cut those wires to get the shifter back to normal cause i think i messed it up. Any toyota owners, please help. Stick to the OEM . I have gotten several after market boot covers and the never fit right or last long. That goes for the shift knob as well. I did get a Hurst shift knob, but that got hot in the Summer and Cold in the winter.

dont waste any money on a manual... boots and knobs are simple, just take out the center console unless the piece with the boot on it is seperate, then swap the boot and put it all back together!! It's simple, just tinker with stuff if you cant do it at first, you'll figure it out.

The best bet is to run down to your local auto parts store and buy a Haynes manual for your car. They'll be far more detailed than we could be (showing pictures, exploded views of the parts) and giving very specific directions.

dont waste any money on a manual... boots and knobs are simple, just take out the center console unless the piece with the boot on it is seperate, then swap the boot and put it all back together!! It's simple, just tinker with stuff if you cant do it at first, you'll figure it out.

there is usually a small hex head bolt that is holding the shift knob on. if you can find that and unscrew it the shift knob will slip right off. if might be under a ring though for cosmetics so if you have any rings on it, usually chrome finished, you can see if they will spin to unscrew or if you can pop them off to get to the hex head bolt. you might just be overlooking it though because they are usually flush with the shift knob and the same color so look really close when you do try to find it.
if there isn't a bolt you might want to look for a c clip that is holding it on, once again it will be very well camouflaged with the shifter so you will have to look hard, once you find it, using a flathead screw driver, pop the clip out and the shift knob will slide right off.

I'm trying to change the shift knob on my 2004 Saturn Ion Sport Coupe. It's a 5 speed manual. I've tried twisting it, pulling it, kicking it (lol), but no luck. I've looked on the back side of it and there doesn't seem to be a screw holding it in either. Do I have to relpace the entire shifter? Saturn is a cheap car so it doesn't surprise me that they didn't put it on like a normal car. Any help before I torch it off?

The difficulty may come in finding or modifying the stock boot to fit the knob you are putting on. In my dads 93 accord and in my 89 prelude, I just painted the numbers white and red (respectively) and left them alone.

How can I lower the actual shift knob in my car?
I have a 2004 Honda Civic EX, it is a manual transmission. I wanted to buy a neuspeed short shift kit for the car to reduce the shift throw, and all the reviews say it is great, however i also want the actual shift knob to sit slightly lower than stock and the short shift kit only changes the throw, not the height. is there a way to get a shorter shift lever or would a smaller shift knob lower it enough?|||Most aftermarket shifters have the actual lever as a separate piece. You could chop it, or look around and find a separate lever that%26#039;s the length you like.

Have a Pontiac Grand Prix and my dog chewed up my leather gear shift knob. I can buy another one but is it just a matter of unscrewing the old and screwing on the new? It has a button for shifting into Reverse, etc.|||your shift knob has a U-Shaped metal clip on the front side of it. you will need to use a screwdriver to pry that clip out. keep this clip for the new knob. once the clip is out, the knob can be pulled upwards off the shaft it rests on. the knob may be wiggled around as it is being pulled up. be careful as you are pulling it up as to not break or bend the wire linkage in the knob. the wire will hook into he new knob. slide the new knob on the shaft and re-insert the metal clip. make sure everything is tight and works properly and there ya go. not too hard, but will take ten or fifteen minutes. good luck!|||ones for manual cars just screw off. never tried it in an automatic. i would imagine it%26#039;s something similar. far from difficult|||I am sure it will not be a put on - put off job. take it to a trustworthy mechanic and have it looked at first, before you buy a new gear knob. Most shift knobs screw off but I need a shift knob that is compatible with the lift-shifter-to-go-into-reverse set up the Accent has. You must install a thick spacer before you put the new knob, otherwise you will not be able to lift shifter for reverse. it will hit against it.

i have a 2003 dodge neon srt-4. i guess in most cars, the shift knobs just unscrew, but not mine. and it doesn%26#039;t have any screws or anything in the knob to loosen it. none of my friends know so i hope somebody on here can help me!|||Pull up on the knob. I found out that when power shifting with mine. No longer have that problem though because I have a MPX shifter ball on now that screws on. This is available at modernperformance.com|||Call a local dealership or look in the manual. There has to be a way to remove it. I had the same issue with a Neon before, but sold the car before i could find out! Good luck man!|||Look up at the bottom of the knob where it goes onto the stick. If there is a small hole or slot, try inserting a small screwdriver or bend out a paper clip if its a small pin hole. Push up into the hole/slot and knob should come off.|||is there a plate on the top of the shift knob? I cant take off the factory one. it doesnt just unscrew. does anyone know how to take it off?|||if you have 1999.5-2005 jetta you have to pull the leather shifter boot... it is held on by an elastic band so that shouldnt be too hard... then there is a clip that need to be bent until i falls down the shaft...after that the shift knob should come off
if its a newer 2006+ jetta, you have to shift into 1st or 3rd and have to push down on the boot to find the clips to undo the boot and lift it up carefully... then you can try to rip off the knob or you can loosen the bronze clip keeping the shift knob on...

I bought a 1999 Ford Mustang a while back and the previous owner had put a knob on the shifter that has lights and stuff - not really my style. When I bought the car, it came with the original shifter knob in the glove box, but I cannot seem to figure out how to take the current one off and replace it with the original. I have pulled up on it, tried to twist it off, tried to push down and twist... Does anyone know how to do this? Thanks.|||If it%26#039;s a manual transmission, simply lift UPWARD on the shift boot and bezel assembly, and it will snap out. Don%26#039;t forget to disconnect the wiring connector to the cigar lighter. Get a 10mm wrench to remove the to bolts that secure the shift lever to the shifter base. Remove everything as an assembly and work with it out of the vehicle. You may need to use two wrenches to loosen the aftermarket knob. The orginal knob simply screws onto the lever. Be carefule not to cut to far into the shaft, once you see that it has cut through the threads all the way stop. It wont hurt it to cut into some of the threads. You may be able to get away with just cutting one side of the knob, as this will relieve the pressure that was caused when it was tightened. I would like to change the shift knob on a 2000 automatic Mercury Sable which is identical to the Ford Taurus of that year.|||The one mounted on the steering column is not changeable it is press fit to the shift lever. I have never really tried to do so but if you really want to change it you might heat it and see if the plastic will give enough to slide it off.

I have a 1993 honda prelude. i have bought a new shift knob for it but am having trouble getting the knob off. How to remove/change shift knob?
So I drive a 1998 saturn sl1, and have been thinking about changing the shift knob but i dont know how to take the stock one off. it has a leather sleeve on it. i know most cars will just untwist but i dont want to force anything and was wondering if anyone has done this with this saturn or a simalar model.|||for a stickshift there on pretty tight. put it in neutral and give it a good twist. its a twist off and twist on type of deal.
