How do you replace the gearshift knob on a 93 Honda Accord?

Looking to change shifting knobs. but im not sure how to remove the original.|||If it is a manual you will need to do the following:

1. You see the silver ring just below the rubber of the OEM knob? It may have worn, but it was at one point silver. Pull down on that. It will remain attached to the boot but should come unclipped from the knob. Pull hard.

2. Once that is detached, you can simply twist the knob counter-clockwise to unscrew it.

The difficulty may come in finding or modifying the stock boot to fit the knob you are putting on. In my dads 93 accord and in my 89 prelude, I just painted the numbers white and red (respectively) and left them alone.

I REPEAT, DON%26#039;T CUT ANYTHING..........

once there, you will see a set screw on the side of the shifter ( usually a torx screw ) loosen the screw and raise the shifter knob straight up.

that%26#039;s all there is to it.|||Sounds like its junk already, so it wont hurt to cut it in half with either a hack saw, or a die grinder with a cutoff wheel in it if you have access to it. Im not sure why your taking the knob of, but it may be easiest to pull the boot down and loosen the jam nut and remove the whole shifter arm so you dont make a mess in the truck. Be carefule not to cut to far into the shaft, once you see that it has cut through the threads all the way stop. It wont hurt it to cut into some of the threads. You may be able to get away with just cutting one side of the knob, as this will relieve the pressure that was caused when it was tightened. Maybe you could replace it with a custom skull shifter, or a little pink pony wouldnt that be cute? Just kidding, good luck.|||The above answers are incorrect.

I own an 02 Chevy S-10, and I removed the knob just like he asked.

The reason it%26#039;s such a pain in the *** is because the numbnuts at Chevy glued the knob to the shifter. There were no screws involved.

You%26#039;ll see it when you cut through it. I had to cut right through the shaft just under the knob.

Yes, I cut the threads completely off. This forces you to buy a knob that is a 2-parter, one part is a ring that fits around the shaft. It is secured with 3 TINY TINY allen screws.

Then the knob itself screws down into the ring. This is the only way you can do it because the original threads are gone.

There is no other way around it. The glue they use is bonded permanantly to the shifter.

It really sucks, I know.|||You need a pick,on the forward part of the shift knob there is a clip.(resembles a staple)grab it with the pick %26amp; pull straight out.then the knob should lift right off.good luck

It also might just thread off, or at worst, you might have to remove the boot and the whole shift arm. It%26#039;s only a few bolts involved though, it really isn%26#039;t too bad even if you have to do that. I wouldn%26#039;t expect that this would be necessary, but depending on how hard it is to work with, it might make it easier to be able to work with everything out of the vehicle.|||Most either have a nut/bolt to unscrew or the whole thing just unscrews itself. I don%26#039;t know if they still use this type of knob. The newest 3000 I have worked on is from the late 90s|||well it shood be easy it think you just unscrew it or it might have a screw on the bottom edge of the knob|||It just unscrews off and on. Lefty loosey, righty tighty. You should put some blue loctite on the threads to keep it from getting loose and spinning on the shift lever when you shift.|||yyghftghbftrghr

How to remove/change shift knob?

So I drive a 1998 saturn sl1, and have been thinking about changing the shift knob but i dont know how to take the stock one off. it has a leather sleeve on it. i know most cars will just untwist but i dont want to force anything and was wondering if anyone has done this with this saturn or a simalar model.|||for a stickshift there on pretty tight. put it in neutral and give it a good twist. its a twist off and twist on type of deal.

if its a automatic, duno never done one.

Changing shift knob in a 1998 Altima?

How hard is this task and what do I have to do? Also, what type of knob can I use, i%26#039;m attempting to customize the car.

Thanks to anyone that can help|||You generally can%26#039;t change out an automatic shift knob, due to the lockout button. Each car uses a different arrangement, and none of them are standardized. You might give your local Nissan dealer a call and see if they have something that might work. Chances are that Nismo might offer something for your car, but it%26#039;s anyone%26#039;s guess.

If it were a manual transmission, all you would need to do is turn the knob to the left and spin the old one off like a bolt and spin the new one on. Just make sure to match the thread pitch first. It will probably be M10x1.25 or M12x1.50, those are the most common ones. To find out what it is, remove the knob and take it into Lowes or any place that sells hardware and match it up using a bolt.|||.... if you dont know how to change the knob you wont get far. is it a stick or auto.. just go to advanced auto parts. they prolly sell something you would like.
