How do I change the shift knob on a 2000 Mercury Sable/Ford Taurus (automatic)?

I would like to change the shift knob on a 2000 automatic Mercury Sable which is identical to the Ford Taurus of that year.|||The one mounted on the steering column is not changeable it is press fit to the shift lever. I have never really tried to do so but if you really want to change it you might heat it and see if the plastic will give enough to slide it off.
