How do i remove the shift knob from a bmw?

the car is a 2005 330ci automatic. i don't like the knob (too bulk) and i want to change it. i tried twisting it but it doesn't work. i tried pulling it up as i was told but i'm afraid to pull too hard cause something might break. what is the right way to do this? any screws to unscrew? also, the knob has this button that i press to move it, what will happen if the knob i replace it with doesn't have this button? do i need the button?

thnx

You definately need that button! It locks the car into whatever gear you chose (1 2 3 D R or P). Without it, you wont be able to change from reverse to drive, or into park.

You need to replace it with another automatic stick, not a manual one, and it isn't as easy as changing a manual knob, as I'm sure you've realised! You'll need to get someone who knows BMW's really well (ie a BMW mechanic) to change it to make sure the button is working ok and everything, and you'll also need to buy a new stick made for BMW's. It won't be cheap.

On an auto you need to pull on the trigger and pull up. It pulls real hard. The button allows u to release the lock you have to have this. If u are going to replace the knob do so with one that is made for your car.
leave it alone if its an automatic
